TENS Electrode Pads

Electrostimulation

Self-adhesive pads that deliver electrical stimulation from a TENS or e-stim unit. An intermediate tool that requires careful placement and health screening.

What it is

The pads are flexible conductive patches with a sticky gel backing and a lead wire connection. TENS units were developed for pain relief, and the same principle is used in electrostimulation play to create unusual sensations. People enjoy the novelty, the involuntary muscle twitches and the way intensity can be controlled precisely.

TENS electrode pads stick to the skin and carry current from a battery-powered TENS or e-stim unit. They produce tingling, buzzing or muscle-contracting sensations depending on placement and settings. Placement rules and health screening are central to using them safely, because current must never pass across the chest or head.

What it involves

  • Pads are applied in pairs to clean, dry skin and connected to a unit designed for use on the body.
  • Sensations range from light tingling to strong pulsing and muscle contractions.
  • Placement is usually on large muscles below the waist, such as the thighs, buttocks or calves.
  • Intensity and pulse patterns are adjusted on the unit, often by the top.

How to start

  1. Read the unit's instructions and learn the placement rules before applying any pads.

  2. Try the pads on yourself first so you understand how the sensations feel.

  3. Start with the unit switched off, attach the pads, and then raise the intensity slowly from the lowest setting.

  4. Keep each pair of pads close together on the same side of the body to begin with.

Going further

  • Explore different safe placements on the legs, buttocks and lower back to compare sensations.
  • Experiment with pulse patterns and frequencies rather than simply turning the power up.
  • Combine electrostimulation with light bondage or sensory play once you are confident with the controls.
  • Learn more about how pad size and spacing change the feel of the current.

Safety

  • Never place pads so current can travel across the chest, and never on the head, neck or front of the throat.
  • Turn the unit off before attaching, moving or removing pads.
  • Apply pads only to intact skin, and avoid areas with cuts, rashes, recent tattoos or numbness.
  • Replace pads that have started to peel, since a small contact area concentrates current and can burn the skin.
  • Use only battery-powered units designed for use on the body, never homemade or mains-powered devices.

Consent

  • Share relevant medical history before play, including heart conditions, implanted devices, epilepsy or pregnancy.
  • Agree on which body areas are acceptable for pad placement.
  • Discuss intensity limits and how the bottom will signal that a sensation is too strong.
  • Agree that the unit will be turned down or off immediately when the bottom asks.

Warnings

  • People with pacemakers, other implanted electronic devices or heart conditions should not use electrostimulation.
  • Anyone with epilepsy, or who is pregnant, should avoid it unless a clinician has said it is safe.
  • Pads placed on the chest or head can affect heart rhythm or cause other serious harm.
  • Stop immediately and seek medical help for chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, fainting or burns that blister.

Good to know

  • Pads lose their stickiness over time and should be replaced when they no longer lie flat and even.
  • Clean and dry the skin before applying pads and avoid lotions, which reduce adhesion.
  • Pads are best kept for one person, since they hold skin oils and cannot be properly cleaned.
  • Store pads on their plastic backing in a sealed bag, away from heat, to keep the gel from drying out.
