What it is
Most systems use nylon webbing straps joined in the middle or arranged as a cross, with plastic or metal buckles for adjusting length. The cuffs are often padded and close with hook-and-loop fasteners or buckles, and many can be unclipped from the straps. People enjoy these systems for the feeling of being held open and still, and because they can stay installed discreetly under the mattress.
An under-bed restraint system is a set of adjustable straps that runs beneath the mattress and ends in four cuffs, one near each corner of the bed. The weight of the mattress holds the straps in place, so no frame, posts or hardware are needed. It allows a partner to be restrained lying on their back or front with arms and legs spread, and it is one of the easiest ways to start exploring restraint at home.
What it involves
- Sliding the straps under the mattress so that a connector reaches each corner of the bed.
- Fastening cuffs around the wrists and ankles and adjusting the strap length for the desired position.
- Restraining a partner in a spread position, either fully stretched or with some slack for movement.
- Using only two straps at a time, such as wrists only, for a lighter experience.
- Combining restraint with touch, teasing, sensation play or a blindfold.
How to start
Install the straps and test the setup while everyone is clothed, practicing how quickly each cuff can be released.
Leave generous slack in the straps for the first session so arms and legs can bend.
Start with wrist cuffs only, or with a short session of a few minutes, and talk about how it feels.
Fit each cuff so you can slide a finger underneath, and check that it sits on the wrist or ankle rather than over the joint.
Going further
- Shorten the straps gradually for a firmer, more stretched position, staying within a comfortable range of motion.
- Try a face-down position once you have confirmed the bottom can breathe freely and turn their head.
- Add other activities, such as sensation play, while keeping the bottom's comfort and quick release in focus.
- Extend sessions slowly, giving breaks to move the arms and change position.
Safety
- Check hands and feet often for coldness, color change, numbness or tingling, and loosen or remove the cuffs if any appear.
- Avoid holding the arms stretched overhead for long periods, since this strains the shoulders and can compress nerves.
- In face-down positions, keep pillows away from the face and make sure the chest can expand freely.
- Keep safety shears that can cut webbing within reach, and practice opening every buckle quickly.
- Never leave a restrained person alone, even briefly.
Consent
- Agree on the position, how stretched the bottom will be and roughly how long the restraint will last.
- Set a safeword and a nonverbal signal, since restraint makes it harder to communicate through gestures.
- Ask about joint, shoulder or back problems before choosing a position.
- Release the bottom right away if they ask, and talk afterward about what felt good and what did not.
Warnings
- Under-bed straps are not designed for strong pulling or body weight, and a determined pull can shift the mattress or break a buckle.
- Being restrained in a spread position can trigger unexpected panic, especially for people with past trauma.
- Persistent numbness, tingling or weakness in the hands after a session may signal nerve compression and should be checked by a doctor.
- Straps that live under the mattress can fray out of sight, so a worn strap may give way during a scene if it is not inspected.
Good to know
- Nylon webbing and fabric cuffs can usually be hand washed with mild soap and air dried, while leather cuffs need leather care.
- Inspect straps, stitching, buckles and hook-and-loop closures regularly for fraying, cracks or weak grip.
- If the system stays installed, tuck the straps away between uses so they are not visible and do not become a trip hazard.
- Choose a set with wide, padded cuffs, adjustable straps and buckles that can be opened quickly with one hand.
- Beds with posts or a sturdy frame allow similar setups with cuffs and straps attached directly to the frame.
