What to say
I want to tell you something about how I feel after our scenes. I really enjoy them while they're happening, but afterward I sometimes feel guilty and keep wondering whether I hurt you in a way you didn't want.
Could we make time after each scene for both of us to check in about how it went? It would help me to hear from you what felt good, and to know that I can tell you when I'm struggling too.
What to do next
Debrief after every scene, ideally once the first glow has faded. Ask what worked, what didn't and how your partner feels now. Hearing clearly that they enjoyed it, and that their limits were respected, can ease guilt more than reassurance in the moment.
Plan aftercare for yourself as well. Some tops need closeness, others quiet time, food or reassurance. Agreeing on this in advance means you aren't left alone with your feelings.
The Safety Handbook explains aftercare and drop for both sides, along with check-ins and debriefs. Reading it together can remind you both that looking after the dominant partner is part of safe, consensual play, not a sign of weakness.
Safety first
Take guilt seriously if it points to something real: a limit that was crossed, a safeword that was missed, or a scene you played while you were actually angry. In that case, stop, talk honestly with your partner and change what needs to change before you play again.
If the guilt is constant, comes with shame about your desires in general or turns into low mood that lasts for days, consider talking to a kink-aware therapist. If you're struggling with dark thoughts, reach out to the helplines on our Helplines page.
Tips
Keep a short journal after scenes: what you felt before, during and after. Patterns can help you understand what triggers the guilt.
Talk to other experienced tops, for example in a well-moderated community. Hearing that others go through the same thing can make it feel much less lonely.
Prevent this next time
A good conversation helps today. A shared tool helps you avoid the same knot next month.
Safe words, check-ins and aftercare give you a shared language for the moment something stops feeling okay.
