The Situation Room

We want to try kink together but don't know where to start

Communication

You're not alone

You're both curious. Maybe a fantasy came up, maybe something in a film caught your attention, or maybe you've wondered for years. But once you start looking, there's a flood of terms, gear and opinions, and you're worried about doing it wrong or making things awkward.

That's a great place to start from, honestly. Curiosity plus caution is exactly the right mix. You don't need equipment or experience, just a willingness to talk, go slowly and stop when something doesn't feel right.

What to say

I've been curious about trying some kink with you, and I think you are too. I don't want to jump into anything big.

Could we each take the preference test on our own, then sit down with our results and pick one or two small things we're both excited about? And let's agree on a safeword before we try anything, even if it seems silly for something gentle.

Change the words until they sound like you. Pick a calm moment, not the middle of an argument.

What to do next

Start with the Preference Test, each of you separately. It shows what you love, what you're curious about and what you don't want, so you don't have to say everything out loud first. Look for the overlaps and begin there.

Then learn a little before you play. Read the library entries for the things you picked, and the basics in our safety section. Talk through what exactly you'll do, how long, what's off the table, which safewords you'll use, how you'll check in, and what kind of comfort you'd each like afterward.

Keep the first try mild: a blindfold, light restraint with something that's easy to undo, or playing with different sensations. Afterward, talk about what felt good, what didn't and what you'd like to try next time.

Safety first

Some activities carry real risk and need skill before you try them, for example anything around the neck, breath play, suspension or needles. Leave them aside while you're starting out. Keep alcohol out of play, and remember that consent can be withdrawn at any moment.

If one of you feels pressured to go further than they want, that's a red flag, not a sign they're boring. If something happens that feels wrong, the helplines on our Helplines page offer confidential support, and if anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

Tips

Laughing is allowed. Awkward moments are part of learning something new together. Try one new thing at a time, and check in again the next day.

Porn isn't a manual. What looks effortless on screen is often planned and rehearsed. Many cities have munches or workshops where you can meet experienced people and ask questions without any pressure to play.

Prevent this next time

A good conversation helps today. A shared tool helps you avoid the same knot next month.

The preference test shows what each of you loves, is curious about or does not want, so you can compare without guessing.
