Bastinado

Impact Play

Bastinado is impact play aimed at the soles of the feet. The sensation is intense and the feet are delicate, so it calls for light technique and careful pacing.

What it is

Bastinado is foot-focused impact play using hands or light implements on the soles. People enjoy it for the sharp, unusual sensation, the vulnerability of exposed feet and the endurance challenge it can present. It is usually done with the feet held still in a comfortable restraint. Because the feet bear body weight, careful technique matters more here than in many other forms of impact play.

Bastinado is the practice of striking the soles of the feet as a form of impact play. The soles are packed with nerve endings, so even light strikes feel intense. The name comes from a historical punishment, but in consensual play the emphasis is on control, restraint and close attention to the receiving partner. It is an advanced activity because foot injuries can affect walking for days.

What it involves

  • The receiving partner's bare soles are struck with a hand, a light paddle, a flexible rod or a similar implement.
  • The feet are usually positioned and lightly restrained so they stay still and the top can aim accurately.
  • Strikes focus on the padded ball of the foot and the heel, where there is more natural cushioning.
  • The nerve-rich soles make the sensation intense, so scenes often move slowly with frequent pauses.
  • Some scenes frame bastinado as an endurance challenge or a historical punishment role-play.

How to start

  1. Learn about foot anatomy and good technique from experienced players before trying it.

  2. Begin with a hand or a very light implement and use gentle taps to gauge sensitivity.

  3. Test the implement on your own palm or thigh so you understand how it lands.

  4. Keep the first session short and stop well before the receiving partner reaches their limit.

  5. Aim only at the padded areas and keep strikes away from the toes, ankles and the top of the foot.

Going further

  • Increase intensity in small steps over several sessions rather than within one scene.
  • Try different light implements to explore stingy and thuddy sensations while keeping force moderate.
  • Add warm-up periods with massage or light tapping so the feet adjust before firmer strikes.
  • Combine bastinado with foot restraint or role-play once you are confident in your aim and control.
  • Debrief after each scene about soreness the next day, and use that feedback to set limits.

Safety

  • Avoid the toes, ankle bones, top of the foot and any area with little padding, where small bones and nerves are exposed.
  • Check frequently for numbness, tingling, unusual swelling or sharp pain, and stop if any appear.
  • Keep intensity moderate, because hard strikes with rigid implements can injure the small bones of the foot.
  • Plan for the receiving partner to walk afterward, and avoid scenes before days that require long periods on their feet.
  • Offer aftercare such as elevation, a cool compress and gentle rest once the scene ends.

Consent

  • Discuss foot health, past injuries, diabetes, neuropathy or circulation problems before agreeing to play.
  • Agree on specific implements and a clear intensity ceiling before the scene begins.
  • Share honestly how much impact experience each partner has, so the top does not overestimate the bottom's tolerance.
  • Use a safeword or signal that works while restrained, and stop immediately when it is used.

Warnings

  • Hard or repeated strikes can bruise deeply, damage nerves or fracture small bones in the foot.
  • Walking can be painful for a day or more after an intense scene.
  • People with diabetes, neuropathy or poor circulation may not feel injury properly and should generally avoid bastinado.
  • Seek medical care for pain that worsens over time, inability to bear weight, lasting numbness or swelling that does not settle.

Good to know

  • Bastinado has a long history as a form of punishment and torture, which is part of why consensual play needs such care.
  • The soles can feel far more sensitive than other impact areas, so lighter implements are the norm.
  • Many players consider it an advanced activity and recommend building impact skills elsewhere on the body first.
  • Implements used on bare feet should be cleaned after each use and kept free of cracks or splinters.
