The Situation Room

I just found out my partner cheated on me

Trust

You're not alone

You saw the messages or heard the truth, and it feels like the ground just gave way. They may be saying it was a mistake, that it meant nothing, that it will never happen again. You're left wondering how you could ever trust them again.

Shock, anger, grief, numbness, and confusion are all normal reactions. You don't have to know what you want to do right now. Your first job is to take care of yourself.

What to say

I'm really hurt and I'm still taking this in. I need some time and space to figure out how I feel. If there's going to be any chance of working through this, I need you to be completely honest with me, to answer my questions truthfully, and to understand that my trust has been broken.

I don't know yet what I'm going to decide. Can you respect that I need time?

Change the words until they sound like you. Pick a calm moment, not the middle of an argument.

What to do next

Give yourself permission to slow down. You don't need to make a decision about the relationship today. Lean on people you trust, and try to keep up with basics like sleep and food.

When you're ready, think about what you would need in order to consider staying, such as full honesty, ending contact with the affair partner, counseling, and time. The Relationship Contract Builder can help you write those needs down clearly.

Some couples rebuild after infidelity, and some don't. Both paths are valid. If your partner isn't willing to take responsibility or do the work, it's okay to decide that the relationship isn't right for you anymore.

Safety first

Watch for blame-shifting, such as being told it happened because you weren't attentive enough or because of how you look. Cheating was their choice, and it's not your fault. Be cautious too if your partner becomes threatening, destroys property, or tries to control where you go after being confronted.

If there's any chance of exposure to sexually transmitted infections, consider getting tested, and you have every right to say no to sex while you sort things out. A counselor or therapist and the helplines on our Safety page can offer support. If anyone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

Tips

Avoid making big decisions, such as moving out, posting online, or confronting the other person, while emotions are at their peak.

Write down your questions and feelings in a journal. It can help you think more clearly before important conversations.

Consider seeing a therapist on your own, whatever you decide about the relationship. And don't stay only out of fear of being alone. You deserve a relationship you choose freely.

Prevent this next time

A good conversation helps today. A shared tool helps you avoid the same knot next month.

An agreement turns what you talked about into something you can both come back to: limits, check-ins and what happens when something feels off.

Write an agreement together
